Chawson First Trofdek Roof Replacement

Trofdek roofs were installed from the 1950’s to 1970’s constructed as a wooden folded structure from a mixture of plywood and solid wood. The system forms a diaphragm structure and was used because it could provide good spans with a relatively light weight structure and was quick to install. The issue with some Trofdek roofs is that they have very little end bearing, often only 25mm – 35mm and the roofs were only designed with minimal loading capacity. Chawson School’s first floor roof was found to be Trofdek and had suffered from deflection over time, thus reaching the end of it’s serviceable life. The whole roof structure needed replacing and we helped the school secure funding and took the project from feasibility through to completion. The first-floor rooms also needed refurbishment as all of the lighting, alarms, etc., were removed with the original roof. The total cost of the project was £250k.

This project has ensured the structural integrity of the building, there are no further disruptions for roof leaks into the future and the reduced running costs for the school heating.
